You applied three weeks ago. It's still live. A friend saw it last month. It never seems to close — because it isn't meant to.

⚠️ TL;DR Of 3,672 repeated job titles we analysed across UK job boards, 459 (12.5%) showed a distinct pattern: the same generic entry-level title, posted from a single location, reposted for months on end. One title hit 164 reposts from one location over 202 days. Genuine multi-branch employers don't look like this — they spread across dozens of locations, not one.

The tell isn't that it reposts. It's how.

Plenty of legitimate employers repost the same title constantly — a national retailer hiring "Store Assistant" across dozens of branches will show the same title hundreds of times. That's normal. They're hiring in many different places, for many different real vacancies.

The pattern worth watching is different: the same generic title, from the same single location, over and over, for months — often alongside several other suspiciously similar "Trainee X" titles from the same poster. We found one advertiser's most-repeated title appeared 164 times, always from one postcode, spread across 202 days. A second title from the same advertiser hit 158 repeats over 127 days — also always from one location. That consistency across multiple titles, not just one, is what separates this from ordinary reposting.

The most common explanation isn't outright fraud — it's a business model where the advertised "job" functions as a funnel into a paid training course or placement programme, with constant reposting designed to keep a wide pool of applicants flowing rather than to fill one specific role. Some of these programmes are legitimate. Others put financial risk disproportionately on the candidate.

None of this means every recurring trainee scheme is bad — some are genuine, and career-changers do get real jobs through legitimate programmes. But the reposting pattern is a useful early signal to slow down and ask harder questions, not a verdict on its own.
